Heartbreakers – L.A.M.F.: The Found ’77 Masters (Limited Transparent Vinyl)is the definitive edition of one of punk rock’s most infamous and beloved albums–finally heard as it was meant to sound. Recorded in London in 1977 by the ex-New York Dolls pairing of Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan,L.A.M.F.(short for “Like A Mother F***er”) became legendary not only for its snarling energy and classic songs but also for its supposedly “muddy” mix–an audio flaw that dogged every release for decades.

The mystery began when Track Records collapsed and the original master tape vanished, forcing later reissues to rely on remixes and outtakes. That changed in 2020, when a forgotten “Copy Master 12.7.77” was discovered in the archive of Track Records director and co-producer Danny Secunda. The tape revealed a crystal-clear mix ofL.A.M.F.–just as the band and producers originally intended. Though none of the original Heartbreakers lived to hear it, this rediscovered version restores the full punch, swagger, and grit of the 1977 sessions.

Pressed on limited transparent vinyl and housed in a printed inner sleeve featuring photos by Roberta Bayley and liner notes by Simon Wright, this edition follows the sold-out 2021 Record Store Day release. The album roars through classics like “Born to Lose,” “Chinese Rocks,” “Pirate Love,” and “One Track Mind,” cementing its place as one of the rawest and most vital documents of punk’s first wave.

As Clem Burke of Blondie put it: “I putL.A.M.F.up there with anything by Eddie Cochran, Little Richard, the Yardbirds, or the Kinks–it’s one of the most brilliant rock ‘n’ roll records ever made.”

Essential for fans of The Ramones, The Clash, and the New York Dolls, this newly unearthed master captures the true sound and spirit of a band that lived–and died–for rock ‘n’ roll.
