When Pink Floyd visited Japan in 1971, they played two festival dates and one show in a small concert hall, planting the seeds for a larger tour the following year.

They returned in March 1972 to perform six shows two each in Tokyo and Osaka, and one each in Kyoto and Sapporo.

Pink Floyd began performing tracks from their upcoming album, The Dark Side of the Moon, in January 1972, fourteen months before the record was due to be released. They played sixteen dates across the UK that featured a full performance of the work in progress, culminating in four nights at Londons Rainbow Theatre. In February 1972, the band began a week-long recording session at Chteau dHrouville studios near Paris, working on the soundtrack for Barbet Shroeders film La Valle.

Pink Floyds whistle-stop tour of Japan began on 6 March in Tokyo and ended on 13 March in Sapporo. Their setlist once again included The Dark Side of the Moon. This double album features the bands extraordinary performance at the Nakajima Sports Center, in Sapporo, on 13 March, in its entirety.
