For Kevin Morby, the “little wide open” feels like the vast sky, small-town lives, and his roots in the Midwest. Its about the land, the people, and those quiet moments that live inside himduty, modesty, familiarity, and a touch of solitude. Morby describes it beautifully: “There’s something unintentionally musical about the Midwest; cicadas chirping in the trees, a train passing, a tornado siren going off.” If you listen closely, beneath that wide-open sky, these almost haunting sounds seem to dance between the ugliness and beauty of the landsometimes working together in surprising harmony. Even though the Midwest isn’t technically the badlands, for Morby, it’s his own rugged landscape. “Little Wide Open” is his eighth studio album, produced by Aaron Dessner, recorded at Long Pond Studio in Stuyvesant, NY, from early 2025 through September. The album features fantastic contributions from Dessner, Amelia Meath, Andrew Barr, Justin Vernon, Katie Gavin, Lucinda Williams, Meg Duffy, and others. Morby sees this record as the third part of a trilogy, following 2020’s “Sundowner” and 2022’s “This Is a Photograph.” Thanks to Dessner’s touch, the albums sound is richer and clearer, echoing the timeless feel of Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers.” It marks a shift in perspective, moving from nostalgia and reminiscing to embracing the flow of time. As Rachel Kushner beautifully puts it in the album’s essay, Morby has gone from “holding onto the past” to “riding passenger with time.” The album is available on eco-friendly colored vinyl.
