- In 1974, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young topped the Billboard 200 for the third year in a row, thanks to a compilation of their greatest hits to date.
The optimistically titled SO FAR contained five of CSN & Y’s six singles to date, and while the sixth, “Marrakesh Express,” apparently didn’t warrant inclusion, there was certainly no problem with the quality of a collection that read “Teach Your Children,” “Ohio, “Woodstock,” “Our House,” and “Suite” contained: Judy Blue Eyes. “The reason the album came about in the first place was that the quartet reunited for a tour in 1974 and named Graham Nash the idea of a greatest hits album consisting of two LPs and one non-LP single was subtly “absurd.” Nevertheless, fans devoured the album and sent it to the top of the Billboard 200 in no time at all.
While SO FAR is admittedly a must-have album for those who haven’t yet decided whether to buy the right albums from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, it’s also a really great sampler of the quartet’s work in the late 60s and early 70s. In other words, it’s no wonder it became a chart topper too.
