In 2000,Max Bemisformed the American rock bandSay Anythingtogether with some friends. Up until 2018, when the band went on a hiatus, they released eight studio albums. In 2007 they released their third studio album,In Defense of the Genre. Bemis mentioned on the album that musically, it’s different, more mature and somewhat more cohesive and poppy, but darker in a whole different way.

The album features 23 individualguest appearances, including Gerard Way(My Chemical Romance),Pete Yorn,Anna Waronker(That Dog),Adam Lazzara(Taking Back Sunday),Aaron Gillespie(Underoath),Matt Skiba(Alkaline Trio) andHayley Williams(Paramore), amongst others.

The cover art was designed byJeff Smith, who is best known as the creator of the comic book seriesBone.In Defense of the Genreis available as a numbered edition on black vinyl. This 180g 2xLP is housed in a gatefold sleeve and includes a 4-page booklet with lyrics.
