180 Gram Black Vinyl Double LP Pressing. Explicit Lyrical Content.
The second commercial and third overall studio album released by US Rapper Eminem, released in 2000. Widely seen as his magnum opus, the album sold over 1.76 million copies in its first week, earning a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as the fastest selling Rap album ever. It went on to sell over 21 million copies worldwide, earning critical acclaim, as well as considerable controversy and protest from groups such as GLAAD for its homophobic and violent lyrics.
Recorded over a two-month period in several studios around Detroit, the album features introspective lyricism reflecting Eminem’s thoughts on his rise to fame, criticism of his music, and estrangement from his family. A transgressive work, it incorporates hardcore hip hop, satirical hip hop, and horrorcore.
As a follow-up to The Slim Shady LP, The Marshall Mathers LP functions as both a remake and a sequel, expanding upon old ideas and branching out into new, surprising territory, with Dr. Dre once again at hand. The former album had established much of Eminems personal and cultural mythology, but on The Marshall Mathers LP, released on May 23, 2000, he would delve in even further and completely deconstruct his personal life. On the track Marshall Mathers he performed a raw excavation, while Drug Ballad found him sneering through a veneer of intoxication; the albums stunning closer, Criminal, saw him walk a tightrope between the two.
