With almost fervent zeal, the grandiose, always feisty singer Elis Regina detested bossa nova. The only exceptions to her bossa aversion were the songs that came from the pen of Tom Jobim. in 1974 Elis and Tom went into the studio together to record this album, which undoubtedly contains some of the most beautiful and best bossa interpretations of all time.
Elis Regina’s versions of pieces like “guas de maro,” “Triste,” “Corcovado,” and “Retrato em branco e preto” set standards that have not been surpassed to this day.
Reviews
“Forty years ago, the record that most strongly expressed her cultural identity and sense of self was released: “Elis & Tom” (1974, on the EmArcy label) as the resounding result of an irrepressible friendship between her and legendary Brazilian composer Antnio Carlos Jobim.on the record, she sang aloud Jobim compositions, including “guas de Maro,” a song voted the best Brazilian song of all time by readers of the newspaper “Folha de So Paulo” in 2001. Regina and Jobim frequently sang the track as a duet in live performances and on Brazilian television.” (RP Online)
