Van Halen had to mature, so they unleashed Women and Children First: a darker, heavier record. While still full of party anthems, like “Everybody Wants Some!!” and “And the Cradle Will Rock,” the keyboard-driven riffs showed ambition that wouldn’t be denied. Entertaining, yet intense, songs like “Fools,” “Loss of Control,” and the power ballad “In a Simple Rhyme” demonstrated the band’s growing songcraft and commitment to rocking hard. Remastered in 2015, this LP is a testament to classic Van Halen.
