In 1986, thrash-metal was in full swing, but Candlemass wanted to go low and slow; a choice that would pay cultural dividends for decades to come. The bands transformative debut, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, was the greatest record to emerge from a small cadre of bands including Saint Vitus and Pentagram who knew there was more meat on the bones of Black Sabbaths dirge-y plods. Candlemass first and, until 2019s the Door to Doom, only album with singer Johan Lngquist remains a doom-metal essential.
